1993 VMAX 750 What to look for

Just picked up a 1993 VMAX4 750 with 980 miles. I plan on doing some routine maintenance this spring before putting it away for the summer. What are some things to look for on this sled. Any weak points or known problematic areas/items to look out for?

I'm thinking this is going to be a fun sled!

Thanks in advance,

Robb

Congratulations on your new sled. They are a lot of fun. Did you pick this one up in Colfax, WI? If you don't have the service manual, you can download it from this site. I would start there. The vmax-4’s are pretty dependable.

Yes, this is the one from Colfax. I test drove it 2-3 weeks ago but had to think about it. It is a low mileage sled but it has spent some time outdoors and has been pulled on an open trailer so it looks a bit rougher than it should with those kind of miles on it. It does run/drive perfectly. It's not all that bad however. It will need some parts to get it into shape but more than anything, it needs a lot of detailing work. I'm guessing a few hundred in new/used parts and many man hours cleaning things up and that should bring it up to a 8.5-9/10 sled. I've got all summer to detail it. He gave me first shot at it since I had been working with him on it for the 2-3 weeks. He said that if I didn't take it for what he offered it to you at, then he would call you. I'm guessing I will have $1700-2000 into it total once it is complete.

Well I’m glad that a member of this site picked it up! It is a shame that the previous owners didn’t take better care of it. It definitely needs some TLC, but I agree that you could have a very nice sled for around $2000. My main concern with that machine was condensation in the crank because of the corrosion in the engine compartment. I hope it’s ok. You should be able to find the cosmetic parts you need on this site. The seat however I think your best bet is the aftermarket one offered on eBay for a buy it now of $139.99. I haven’t used one myself but it got good reviews from the members on here.

Hopefully the crank is OK. I do know that it runs great. As a matter of fact, the first time I went to look at it the guy wasn't even home. He said just go to the back garage and take a look at it and take it out for a quick spin if you'd like and tell me what you think. He said it may be hard to start though as it hasn't been run in about 2-3 months. 3 pulls and it was running very nicely, so I was impressed with how well it ran. You can also tell it is a low mileage sled because everything on it is still tight. But it definitely has been exposed to the elements.

On the seat cover, I am going to try to find a nice factory used seat if at all possible. I have seen those covers on E-Bay and my sister has a connection with a silk screener nearby and I could have the "YAMAHA" screened on the side of that E-Bay cover if it comes down to that. I'm thinking that might not look too bad.

It is going to be tough finding a good used seat. These machines are nearly 20 years old and the seats are the first thing that goes to hell. Although my brother just looked at a 92 vmax-4 that had a brand new oem old stock seat on it. So I guess anything is possible. I just bought a 92 last weekend and the seat is shot. My plan is to give the one on eBay a try and just have the yamaha logo screened on at my local upholstery shop. It sounds like they can do it for 20 or 30 bucks. I think it will look pretty good.

Congratulations on the sled. It sounds like it will be a very nice one once you get a chance to clean it up. Post us some pictures if you get a chance.

I hated pulling mine on my open trailer. Even with the factory cover, it was covered with dirt and slush when we got where we were going.

I wouldn't give up on a seat too quickly. I agree that they're rare, but I recently saw a new OEM seat on ebay. It didn't last long, but there are still people finding NOS parts in warehouses and such.

I edited your "570" in the thread title and made it "750".
