Hi Mark

The 92's had a 13 plate wide chain, 93/94 were 15 plates wide and 95 up were 17 plates wide. As the plate count grows so does the width of the gear and the chain. The spacers in the chaincase also differ according to the width of the gears

That's interesting. I've only had my chaincase apart a couple of times, so I don't pay that much attention to what's inside. I do know that my gear ratio is not what the service manual states as being the stock gear ratio. I think that the gears I have are for the '92-'94's. I bought a big bunch of parts from a member that had a '92. I didn't even get half the parts I paid for, but that's a different story. The center spline looks like it's for a 1" shaft, I assume the 800's had a larger diameter shaft.

Mark, the shafts should be the same diameter because I use all 93/94 15 wide gears in our 800's

Some guys said they had problems with the chains breaking, we have had no issues. Keep the chains tensioned properly so you don't take up the slack at a 5500 rpm engagment and you should be fine. If you do snap a chain the results can be quite dismal. Right or wrong would be a matter of personal prefrance.
