Help with my 394 original mile 94 Vmax 4

Hello,

I have a 94 vmax 4 that had sat in the shed for two many years. I would put oil down the cylinders and pull it over from time to time. The gas was foul and the carbs were siezed. I bought a set of carbs that were cleaned off of ebay and drained the gas tank.
New gas and the carbs changed it fired up and ran like a champ. I had it out for a run and the sled was sitting idling away. I moved my Apex GT inside the garage and went to move the Vmax 4. As it was moving the sled backfired and then shut off as if you turned off the key.
I went to restart it and could not pull the cord. It woudn't budge. I took off the belt guard and went to turn the clutch. I had to spin the motor backwards to get it to move.
I pulled the cord and it fired up again but the motor did not sound right!! I went to rev it up and the sled will not move. Even when I give it more throttle the clutch does not seem to engage and it definately does not sound right.

What could the problem be? Other than letting this beautifull sled sit to long?

thanks in advance

please help!

sounds like your tether cord button is acting up.. we had this happen on our 93' vmax4 last year.. the button would make the TORS (throttle override) engage witch makes it sound really weird and bad, and can also cause it to backfire.. all that we had to do was get a new tether cord cap, the rubber was cracked and was not holding the switch down tight enough.

check the rubber on the tether cord, if its bad start up the sled and push down on the tether cord cap.. &if it runs better when you do so, that's your problem

as for why the motor wouldnt turn over.. i dont know,, maybe a more experienced member will chime in..

Hope i could help, give that a try,let me know how it goes.

Good luck!

Tether's are not standard equipment on a Vmax4, so he probably doesn't have one.....From the sound of things, it may be seized up, since you couldn't pull it over and the clutch wouldn't spin forward......Maybe try a compression test.

i was thinking air box tab. check your airboxes to see if any of the tabs are missing. If the engine is now turning over the damage may already be done. But lets hope not.

I'm skeptical of the "clean" carbs off Ebay. Maybe looked clean from the outside but sounds like a possible blocked pilot jet in one of the cylinders.

Well I got around to checking the sled out tonight. No tabs are missing on the airboxes. I checked compression from the clutch side over to the rewind side and these were the results; 135, 135, 135, 145.
For some reason my primary clutch appears not to be fully released, almost stuck partially in. This causes drag on the belt and makes it difficult to turn over.
I took the belt off and it spins over like a champ?

any ideas?

primary is dirty, same thing happened to me a few years ago. I would say there is a good chance something got in between the sliders and the clutch. at least its not an airbox tab sucked into the motor. If you have a clutch puller you can take off the clutch and clean everything as best as you can. People have been removing all the guts and running them through a cycle of the dishwasher. Sounds crazy but I guess it gets everything very clean.

Sounds like you got lucky, from the sound of things, I thought for sure you'd have melted it down.......Get a clutch puller, pull the primary off and give it a good cleaning. 394 miles, that's almost as good as my 95 that had 379 miles.....LOL. Throw some pics up, it's always cool seeing those low mile original Vmax4's.

Well gang. Fresh gas, cleaned carbs, new plugs and voila!!! off to the races. Runs like a top again. Don't you just love the sound of these!! Well I still have to take the clutch off and clean that. I will try and post a pic when I work up enough courage!
